1900 to 2000 East and West Coanwood
1900- The turn of the Century ,1900, was a much quieter time in Coanwood with several properties going into disrepair for the first time. This was mainly due to the closure of the Colliery at Dykes in the late 1800's and the Miners moving to pastures new.
Tanpits was empty for about 15 years and the old thatched roof most likely deteriated beyond repair,
Low Toddlewood was not lived in for some time,
Both houses at Gorcock stood empty and were never inhabited again,
The six miners cottages at Dykes were turned into Farm Buildings
1901- Greensyke, Garage built on next to main house. A stone with this date exists today.
1909- Coanwood Reading Society at the Quaker Meeting House was closed Oct 17th 1909 after 59 years
1910- Thomas Snowball moved from Rockhouse to Highgate (just off the road half way up Dykes Bank-no longer any buildings here) and started a family with his wife Mary. They had 18 children some of whom are still alive today with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, many living locally. There must be hundreds of folk now in their family tree as 45 years ago the count was 83 people!!!
1923- West Garbutt Hill/Tanpits/Dykes were purchased from the Lowes Family by Robert Wigham of Hargill House to expand his property portfolio in Coanwood
1970- Yont the Cleugh farm was purchased by Neville Hanson and converted into a Caravan Park which he ran with his son Peter until it changed hands in 1995. Since then the site has had 4 owners and is still thriving. Visit their website www.yontthecleugh.co.uk
